The Issue

Zoo world, in Panama City Beach, FL, has exceeded the amount of space in their facility by forcing large exotic animals to live in small, insufficient areas.

The location at 9008 Front Beach Rd, Panama City Beach, FL 32407, puts this facility in a heavily trafficked area with no room to expand. Animals are held in small, enclosed areas. Many feel that the location of the enclosed areas holding these animals gives them no choice but to interact with humans, being exposed to high traffic and noise volume of those traveling down, and towards Front Beach Drive. In result, these circumstances are believed to be the main contributing factors to Zoo World having an increase in unexpected young animal deaths at their facility, such as their giraffes, over the course of the last couple of years.

In 2013, after the death of a five month old giraffe at Zoo World, a Federal Inspector's report for the U.S. Department of agriculture stated that the barn containment area at Zoo World contributed to the death of the young giraffe.

It has been voiced by many in the community the concerns of this establishment and the welfare of these animals. Many local residents and nonlocal residents refuse to revisit Zoo World a second time after witnessing the unusual state of stress  portrayed by the animals, as well as the inhumane atmosphere and ecosystem provided to these animals at the facility. Community members continue to voice the disturbance that they have encountered with the giraffe and lion containment areas in particular after visiting other zoos and facilities. Many would prefer the relocation of the animals and that they be provided with adequate and humane enclosures.

Additionally, the following could be grounds to investigate:

According to State of Florida Animal Cruelty Statute 828.13: "Whoever (b) keeps any animals in any enclosure without wholesome exercise and change of air.." constitutes a misdemeanor of first degree and can be charged with a fine up to $5,000.00 or both a fine and imprisonment.
