Justice for Theo by Boycotting Blue Pearl in Brooklyn

The Issue

On Sunday May 19, 2019, my dog Theo was brought to Blue Pearl's Brooklyn location. He was incredibly ill and passed away in Blue Pearl's hospital early in the morning of May 20th, a week shy of his 5th birthday. On June 19th, one month to the day since he was brought into the care of Blue Pearl Brooklyn, I received a phone call telling me that Theo’s body was missing. There was no record of his body. The entire story of how Blue Pearl lost my dog's body and still employs those who lost him is below.

/////////

After my initial shock, I spoke to a receptionist who told me about options for cremation. I told her I wanted an individual cremation along with his paw print. I paid the additional $300 and was told to expect his ashes within 1-2 weeks.

The week of June 3rd, I spoke to Blue Pearl and was told that his ashes would now be ready in 2-3 weeks. I found it odd that this was taking so long but still did not think anything was wrong. I called the following week and asked if it would be possible to have his ashes delivered to their Midtown location, which is close to my apartment, so I did not have to deal with the anguish of traveling almost an hour to retrieve them. I was told this was not a problem and confirmed multiple times he would be transferred there.

On June 19th, one month to the day since he was brought into the care of Blue Pearl Brooklyn, I received a phone call from Jontae. She told me that Theo’s body was missing. Regency, the crematory, had no record of him. There were no ashes for me. There was no paw print for me. There was no record of his body.

Later that evening I received a call from Amy Lubinski, the Practice Manager in Brooklyn. She told me that she believed Theo had been processed under another patient’s name and that there was no way to find out what happened despite Blue Pearl’s multiple checks and balances for handling a patient’s body. She also told me I would receive a written summary of our phone call later that evening. By June 25th, I had yet to receive this summary and I had several additional questions due to discrepancies from our conversation.

Amy sent me the following summary of the pure negligent care from Blue Pearl that Theo received after his death.

"I spoke to Ms. Rosen on the phone on the evening of Weds 6/19. I became aware of her dog "Theo" in that same week and that his body had been misplaced by our hospital. Despite our best efforts to locate him, we were unsuccessful in doing so. I have never had this situation before as we log everything via paperwork that goes to the crematory as well as in our record keeping system. Typically the paperwork for each patient is scanned into our system. In this case it was not. I do not know why. The staff members who were present were unable to offer me more information despite my asking. I cannot apologize enough for what happened. It is inexcusable and I will do everything in my power to ensure this does not happen again."

I followed up four times after that email with additional questions before Amy had the decency to write back to me on June 28th. I had absolutely no idea there was no paperwork for Theo. This was not something I was told on our original phone call nearly two weeks prior. I was also told by Amy that the vet technicians who handle bodies and were working the night of Theo’s death had no information. This is an unacceptable answer. This means there are people working at Blue Pearl Brooklyn who are more concerned about their jobs than the dogs they care for. There are liars working at Blue Pearl Brooklyn because there is somebody who made a mistake and is not telling the truth.

I am horrified by the way Theo was treated at Blue Pearl. I am disgusted by their staff who found it appropriate to wait one month before telling me his body was lost.

NO ONE SHOULD EXPERIENCE WHAT I DID AT BLUE PEARL. PLEASE boycott all Blue Pearl locations, especially the one in Gowanus, Brooklyn located at 190 Third Avenue.

Additionally, there is no reason that "staff members were unable to offer me more information." This means staff members are liars.

We need to show Blue Pearl that this behavior is negligent, disgusting, unacceptable and inhumane. Blue Pearl has over 80 locations throughout the United States so please pay attention even if you are not based in Brooklyn, or New York in general.
