To: Liverpool City Council
We the undersigned would sincerely like to take this opportunity to support Blue Ocean Planet (BOP) in their campaign to make Liverpool Shark fin free, and to see a ban on the barbaric practice of shark finning, shark fin soup, and the trade in shark fins.

The shark fin trade is driven by the growing demand for shark fin soup – a delicacy popular at middle-to higher-class Chinese banquets like weddings. Many Chinese wedding couples and consumers have already joined the movement and pledged to not consume shark fin. One-third of open ocean sharks are being threatened with extinction, banning shark fin products would reflect this growing change and help curb shark finning effectively.
Sharks in Trouble:
Shark populations are devastated by overexploitation, including targeted fishing, by-catch and finning. A total of 141 shark species are classified as threatened or near threatened with extinction. Sharks have survived for 450 million years, but may be gone within the next decades. Our growing demand for shark fin soup has increased the slaughter of sharks to such a great extent that many shark species are already nearing extinction. Over 77million sharks are killed every year for the shark fin trade.

Sharks are vital to ocean health.:
The ocean ecosystem is made up of very intricate food webs. "Sharks are at the top of these webs and are considered by scientists to be "keystone" species, meaning that removing them causes the whole structure to collapse " (Shark Savers)

Join thousands of biologists, divers and shark advocates who are serious about shark protection.

Sign the petition and urge your friends and colleagues to do the same. Many cities around the world are becoming shark fin free, including Toronto and California. If Liverpool became shark fin free, we could show the world, we can be multicultural, forward thinking and help towards protecting the wider environment and its oceanic species from extinction.

Join us to Stop the Soup – Spread Shark Truth. Sign our petition urging Liverpool City Councillors to enact legislation that would ban shark fin products in Liverpool.
