Ban Homophobic Florist From BloomNation Platform

The Issue

At the beginning of Pride Month a florist in Ketchikan, Alaska denied services to a couple for their same sex wedding.

By denying this couple of flowers for their wedding based on homophobic beliefs, this florist violated the BloomNation Florist’s Rules of Conduct. BloomNation is posting about Pride Month and falsely advertising their support of the LGBTQ+ community as they are still working with the homophobic florist and allowing them to use their platform.

Sign this petition to show that we recognize BloomNation's support of LGBTQ+ individuals is performative and means nothing if they don’t act. Demand that BloomNation:

1. Bans this homophobic florist from using their platform and technology for their website and e-commerce.

2. Update their “Florist’s Rules of Conduct” to specifically include policies on anti-discrimination for LGBTQ+ individuals on and off of the BloomNation platform.

Days after the incident the citizens of Ketchikan protested outside of the flower shop to show that their city does not tolerate hate. Within a week the City Council took action to start the process to include anti-discrimination for LGBTQ+ Individuals in their anti-discrimination policies. On 6/16/20 the City Council passed the Equal Rights amendment to their Municipal Code. This Equal Rights Chapter now makes it ILLEGAL to discriminate against someone based on their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Ketchikan will now be the 4th Alaskan city to provide anti-discrimination protection for LGBTQ+ Individuals.

Sadly BloomNation has not taken direct action to ban this homophobic florist from using their platform. BloomNation removed the homophobic florist from BloomNation.com but has decided to let them continue to use their platform to host their website. While BloomNation has stated that they have removed the affiliation to BloomNation, the florists website is covered with BloomNation logos and marketing. BloomNation stated that it is not for them to “block people from using their technology because of someone’s beliefs and opinions.” They continued saying that their “technology is a utility, just like the phone they use, the store they lease, the social media accounts they have or the accounting software they purchased”, but just like other social media and marketplace platforms, when a user violates their rules, they should be banned from using that platform.

BloomNation says they stand with the LGBTQ+ community but BloomNation continues to profit off of this homophobic florist every day that the florist is allowed to use the BloomNation platform.

The Decision Makers

Responded
BloomNation stands with the LGBTQ+ Community. We have zero tolerance for any behavior that goes against equal rights and diversity. Our stance is clear not only in our words but in our actions. Once we fully understood the situation, we swiftly took action and removed the Florist from our community/marketplace and also removed affiliation from any web presence of the florist. BloomNation.com is consumer facing brand/community and we have the right to associate with sellers who share the same values as us. We did not make this decision because we were demanded to or because of a legal jargon in our terms of service, we did it because it was the right thing to do. While we are clearly against the discriminate, we made the tough decision to allow the florist to continue to use our technology to power their independent website. But why would we do that when we are saying that we stand against their actions? It is because of 2 factors: 1. We view our Marketplace and our software solution as two distinct properties. Providing a website is a utility, just like a store-front or a telephone 2. While we completely disagree with the views of this florist, they still have the rights of every other American to have a store-front, receive telephone service, purchase equipment, use social media platforms and have a web presence. Yes, by allowing the florist to have a web presence, BloomNation is receiving revenue from this florist, in the same way their cell phone provider is receiving revenue from their monthly bill or the Apple company is when they purchase a computer from them. Virtually every corporation is “profiting” from people who don’t share the same values as the LGBTQ+ community. We might not explicitly see it, but there are bigots that spend money. As a foreign born middle eastern that has an islamic background, I know a fair share about judgement, inequality and racism. I empathize with the couple and everyone affected by this. But shutting down this Florist’s website won’t solve the problem. We need to put our energy in conversations, in changing the laws, in educating people and ultimately in bringing people closer together. BloomNation is dedicated to spreading awareness around equality and will continue to stand by the LGBTQ+ community.
