The Issue

Petition to Block the Sale and Dispensing of Alcohol at the Proposed Restaurant at 8334-8340 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles

To: The Los Angeles City Council, Department of City Planning, and Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC)

PUBLIC HEARING: Meeting Wednesday, February 5, 2025 9:30 a.m.

OPTIONS TO PARTICIPATE:  SEE BELOW.

We, the undersigned residents, business owners, and community members, strongly oppose the issuance of an alcohol license for a proposed restaurant at 8334-8340 West 3rd Street due to its significant impact on parking congestion, traffic, and the local business environment.

Key Concerns:
Severe Parking Shortage: The proposed development includes 77 residential units without providing adequate parking for tenants. This will drastically increase demand for on-street parking, which is already overburdened in the area.

Increased Traffic and Parking Issues: Adding a restaurant to this development will exacerbate parking and traffic problems, particularly affecting Flores and Sweetzer Avenues, which currently provide 2-hour parking for local businesses. Increased congestion could lead to further parking restrictions, including complete no-parking zones, harming businesses that rely on customer access.

Violation of Fair Parking Policies (AB 2712): Under California’s AB 2712, new and existing developments built without standard parking minimums are excluded from preferential parking districts, meaning their residents cannot obtain parking permits. This forces them to rely on already limited public street parking, impacting existing residents and businesses.
Community Disruption: The introduction of a restaurant with alcohol service could lead to increased noise, late-night disturbances, and safety concerns in a neighborhood already struggling with parking and traffic flow.

Call to Action:
We urge city officials to block the approval of any alcohol license for this location until the developers address the parking shortage and reconsider their development plans to include on-site parking for residential tenants.

The city must prioritize responsible urban planning that does not place undue hardship on local businesses and residents. We call on decision-makers to act in the best interest of the community and ensure that our neighborhood remains livable and accessible.

We, the undersigned, request the City of Los Angeles to deny the alcohol license for the proposed restaurant at 8334-8340 West 3rd Street.
