Blinding headlights - Greater Chicago Area

The Issue

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, nearly half of nighttime accidents are caused by poor visibility. One thing that can be agreed upon by residents within the greater Chicago area is that blinding LED headlights that are mounted on Teslas and Raised trucks directly impede drivers' abilities to observe their surroundings. To put this into perspective, if it can impair young healthy drivers with 20/20 vision, what is the effect on drivers who already suffer from impaired vision or disorders? Another reason that this is such an extensive issue is that there is no legislation that is consistent enough to keep up with updated car headlights. Car manufacturers are allowed to create “high intensity” or “adaptive” headlights, but there's no real national brightness limit that reflects how these lights impact real drivers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety even found that only 22% of headlights on the market provide adequate visibility WITHOUT glare. But we have tools that we can use to fix this. The European Union and Canada both enforce standardized bright caps and new adaptive dimming technology, which automatically lowers beams when another vehicle is in sight. Some states have even started pilot programs that check for bright level when checking for carbon emissions. We need to bring this issue to the attention of the legislature at the higher level, and we can only begin to do this with a petition. Sign this petition to protect our roads and infrastructure.
