Declaring a Climate Emergency in Blackpool

The Issue

Our opportunity - Our Voice - Our future and together we can make a positive difference.

We are facing a catastrophe climate breakdown. Leading scientists have warned that we now have 11 years to take emergency action on climate change or we face the gravest threats to our local and global environment. This includes worsening risks of drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty for hundreds of millions of people. We must action urgently, starting by immediately declaring a national climate emergency

On 8th October 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a vital report on the state of climate science. They warned that if the planet warmed by 1.5C there would be some devastating consequences. Yet the consequences of allowing 2C warming would be truly catastrophic.

Sir David Attenborough CBE, the amazing voice of BBC's 'Planet Earth' who put it even more bleakly "If we don't take action, the collapse of our civilisations and the extinction of much the natural world is on the horizon".

This is a joint petition (e-petition and paper) and we the undersigned, call on Blackpool Council for a debate at Full Council to:

1. Declare a ‘Climate Emergency’. This is an internationally recognised declaration which has been used by authorities in the UK and across the world to acknowledge the impact of the changing climate.

2. Pledge to make the town of Blackpool carbon neutral by 2030 taking into account both production and consumption emissions.

3. To commit to providing resources to address this emergency and to develop appropriate policies to tackle climate change and meet the climate crisis head on.

4. Work with local people and organisations for a 3 month consultation period to produce a zero-carbon plan that benefits our local community and shared environment.

5. Call on Westminster to provide the powers and resources to make the 2030 target possible.

6. Report to full council within 6 months with the actions the council will take to address this emergency.
