On November 18th, The Binghamton Review, an SA chartered magazine, published a vile antisemitic statement. In response to an article written by a Jewish student in Pipe Dream which said: “I did Jewish youth group, Jewish camps, the works,” The Binghamton Review responded: “Did those ‘Jewish camps’ help you with your concentration?” “Jokes” like these are dangerous, and minimize the atrocities of Holocaust and concentration camps. Antisemitism has no place at Binghamton University, and the Student Association should not be charting a magazine that is publishing hate speech.

The Editor-in-Chief of the Binghamton Review responded to the outcry by saying, “We will not apologize; it’s not our responsibility if some people can’t laugh at themselves.” He also said he would publish it again, and claimed the joke isn’t antisemitic because it was created by a Jewish member. His language may be free speech; but its also hate speech that should not be spread by an organization chartered by the Student Association.

The Binghamton Review has long history of racially insensitive, homophobic, sexist and bigoted journalism. This isn’t the first time, and it certainly won’t be the last unless BU steps up and does something about it.

We demand that Binghamton University remove the Binghamton Review, and take swift disciplinary action against Tommy Gagliano and the writers accountable for the antisemitic “joke.”
