Stand Against Racism and Remove Nathan Bedford Forrest

The Issue

On June 2, 2020, NASCAR announced the Nashville Superspeedway will host a cup race in 2021. On June 7, 2020, NASCAR president Steve Phelps’s made the following statement:

“Those watching at home, thank you for your time. Our country is in pain and people are justifiably angry, demanding to be heard. The black community and all people of color have suffered in our country and it has taken far too long for us to hear their demands for change. Our sport must do better. Our country must do better. The time is now to listen, to understand and to stand against racism and racial injustice. We ask our drivers, our competitors and all our fans to join us in this mission, to take a moment of reflection to acknowledge we must do better as a sport and join us as we may now pause and … listen.”

Four days later, NASCAR issued another statement, which said:

"The presence of the Confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the Confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties."

On June 5, 2020, Roger Goddell, commissioner of the National Football League, issued a state which said:

"We, the National Football League, condemn racism and the systematic oppression of black people. We, the National Football League, admit we were wrong for not listening to NFL players earlier and encourage all players to speak out and peacefully protest. We, the National Football League, believe that black lives matter." He continued by saying, "We are listening. I am listening. And I will be reaching out to players who have raised their voices and others on how we can improve and go forward for a better and more united NFL family."

On June 9, 2020 it was announced Nashville, TN was attempting to lure the NFL draft back in 2024 or 2025.

That same day, while debating a bill to remove the Nathan Bedford Forrest statue from the Tennessee Sate Capitol, Representative Jerry Sexton said “It was not against the law to own slaves back then,” Sexton said. “Who knows, maybe some of us will be slaves one of these days. Laws change.” Another bill which would have removed the requirement to have a special day of observance for Forrest was watered down. Instead of removing the statutory requirement to recognize Nathan Bedford Forrest Day, the Republican lead House voted only to remove the statute which required the Governor to sign an official Nathan Bedford Forrest Day proclamation.

Forrest was not just a slave owner, he was a slave trader, a Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, and a murderer who ordered his troops to line up and execute nearly 300 Union soldiers who had surrendered.

If the words of the NFL and NASCAR are more than a publicity stunt, and if the leadership of both sports are truly dedicated to doing their part to combat racism, they will not reward Nashville or any other state in Tennessee with a draft, awards banquet or race. Likewise, if the sponsors of the NFL and NASCAR are dedicated to being part of the solution instead of contributing to the problem, they will withdraw their sponsorship until NASCAR and the NFL publicly commit to boycotting the state of Tennessee until:

  • The Tennessee General Assembly pass a law making the display of the statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest on any property owned by the state of Tennessee other than the Tennessee State Museum illegal until 2120, and
  •
Repeal of the statute requiring the observance of Nathan Bedford Forrest Day until 2120.

If the NFL and/or NASCAR fail to commit to boycotting Tennessee, and the sponsors refuse to withdraw their sponsorship of the sports, we ask for a national and international boycott of the following companies:

Verizon
Amazon
Monster Energy
Anheuser-Bush
Oakley
Coca-Cola
Nike
Xfininty
Geico
Pepsi
Camping World
3M
Lowe’s
