Never Again! Put Our Children's Safety First. Sign Avonte's Law, the "Audible Alarms Bill".
The Issue
In at least eight instances this school year alone, vulnerable young and disabled children have left New York City public school buildings without the schools’ knowledge through doors without alarms.
Avonte Oquendo’s life was lost. Other children, as young as age four, from Brooklyn to the Bronx, were exposed to all of the dangers of walking the streets of New York City on their own.
The Audible Alarms bill, known as "Avonte's Law", which currently has 46 sponsors in the New York City Council, would require the Department of Education to install audible alarms on the exterior doors of public school buildings housing elementary and District 75 programs.
Chancellor Carmen Farina recently testified at a City Council hearing on this matter. She declared that installing the door alarms is not important. We, the parents and community members, vehemently disagree.
This safety issue must be addressed promptly, before the expansion of pre-kindergarten brings thousands of additional three and four year-olds into school buildings this Fall.
We call on Melissa Mark-Viverito to stop stalling and bring the Audible Alarms Bill, "Avonte's Law" to a floor vote.
We call on Mayor de Blasio, to put our children's safety first and sign the Audible Alarms Bill, "Avonte's Law.
