Marsha P. Johnson & Murray Hall Street Names near Stonewall!

The Issue

Co-name Grove Street between Stonewall Place and West Fourth Street Marsha P Johnson Way, and co-name Sixth Avenue between West Tenth and Eleventh Streets to honor Murray Hall.

Marsha "Pay It No Mind" Johnson was a revolutionary trans activist, Stonewall uprising instigator, Warhol model, drag queen, street saint and downtown NYC fixture from the 1960’s through her too-soon demise in 1992. Marsha was the best friend of Sylvia Rivera, who already has a street name in the neighborhood. During the raid of the Stonewall Bar, Marsha launched the uprising by throwing the "shot-glass heard around the world."

Murray Hall was a prominent Tammany Hall political figure who was revealed as biologically female upon his death in 1901, placing him among the first female-bodied people to participate in city politics and vote. His home was on Sixth Avenue between West Tenth and Eleventh Streets.

Co-name 8th Ave at West 16th St to honor Gilbert Baker. Gilbert created the mile-long gay pride flag at Stadtlanders Pharmacy, known for AIDS medications, for the 25th anniversary Pride march. The giant flag set Gilbert's 1978 rainbow design as the global symbol of the LGBT community.

This is the moment for the city to recognize these pioneers of gender freedom at Stonewall National Monument. Let's get this done in time for pride!
