Bike lane between Library and ILP at UCSB

The Issue

As many Gauchos know, the pathway between the Davidson Library and the new Interactive Learning Pavilion building at UC Santa Barbara has been used as an unofficial bike/skateboard lane for years. Since the opening of the ILP, there have Campus Security Officers stationed along the pathway to enforce unnecessary rules and fining people ridiculous amounts of money for simply biking and skateboarding to class.

Students previously attempted to make the bike lane themselves with chalk, even aptly dubbing it the 'Henry T. Yang Bike Path', before campus officials unjustly eradicated the effort.

As of right now, people who wish to bike to the East side of campus without facing potential consequences are forced to go around to the UCen Road and share it with cars, buses, and other large vehicles with no official guidelines as to how to safely share the space. This poses a significant safety and accessibility threat to many people who wish to simply bike safely across the campus that they pay thousands of dollars to attend.

For the safety and wellbeing of UCSB students and the community at large, UCSB administration and Transportation & Parking Services must immediately agree to constructing a bike path alongside the established pedestrian pathway. This will solve many grievances and valid concerns from Gaucho bikers and will ultimately make our campus a more accessible and efficient educational environment.
