Burrell high school recently changed from girls wearing white and boys wearing blue to everyone wears blue for graduation. It was said Burrell made this change because there is more than one gender for the Non-binary students and that they were offended by the tradition. No hate to the non-binary, but, I think I can speak for most females graduation from Burrell, we are offended by this decision. We have looked forward to wearing white caps and gowns our whole school career. We are proud of being female. We are not boys. We refuse to wear the color of cap and gown the boys wear for graduation at Burrell. If the colors are a problem for the non-binary, then why can’t they just pick the color they would most prefer to wear, either blue or white, on graduation day. It is encouraged by Burrell for the LGBTQ community to express themselves, so why will us females from Burrell not be allowed to to walk at graduation if we express our genders femininity by wearing white gowns at graduation? Seems like a double standard to me. The graduating class of 2022 females from Burrell will wear white caps and gowns as tradition.
