Better training for UK police based on RACISM appropriate force,elderly& child protection.
The Issue
On May 7th 2020 in Manchester Desmond Ziggy Mombeyarara was pulled over by the police and tasered in front of his young child. The force used seemed excessive (as it often does when police are dealing with the black and other ethnic communities). Mr Mombeyarara's son was not shielded or moved away from the incident as it took place. The child had to go through unnecessary trauma.
In comparison we see our white / European counterparts treated in a much more humane, dignified and proper way. Even when they are displaying behaviours that could clearly warrant the use of force. This can be seen in many instances, that have been recorded up and down the country; heavily featured all over the internet. Now is the time for us to make a stand and come together for change. Change that will be for the greater good of all and not just one race of people.
“A growing body of research has established that young children may be affected by events that threaten their safety or the safety of their parent/caregivers, and their symptoms have been well documented. Young children depend exclusively on parents/caregivers for survival and protection - both physical and emotional. When trauma also impacts the parent/caregiver, the relationship between that person and the child may be strongly affected.“
This problem could be solved by providing officers with a more robust training programme that holds an emphasis on when force should be used, what type of force, and if a weapon is in fact needed, along with careful consideration for children and the elderly who are at the scene of an alleged crime, but also in general, when dealing with members of the public who could be innocent of any wrongdoing. In light of recent events, further training on the use of attenuating energy projectile (AEP) should be reviewed.
Although discriminating irritant projectile (DIP) seems not to be in widespread use by the police force in the UK, at the moment, I do feel it is worthy of a mention when looking ahead into the future; as this could also cause great trauma to an adult or child if use becomes widely available as part of the UK police force weaponry.
