“Better Governance, Not Bigger Government”
Say No to Unnecessary Expansion of Legislators
Subject: Request for Deferral of Proposed Increase in Number of Members of Parliament and State Legislatures

Government of India
Respected Sir/Madam,
We, the undersigned citizens of India, respectfully submit our strong concerns regarding the proposed increase in the number of Members of Parliament and State Legislative Assemblies.
The Constitution of India envisages a governance framework that balances representation with efficiency. Historically, through measures such as the 42nd Constitutional Amendment Act and the 84th Constitutional Amendment Act, the nation has consciously deferred expansion in the number of representatives in the larger national interest. We believe that:
- The current number of elected representatives is adequate for effective governance.
- Increasing their number will impose a significant and recurring financial burden on the nation’s limited resources.
- Expansion may lead to greater administrative complexity, inefficiency, and reduced accountability, rather than improved governance.
- Such a move may also raise concerns regarding federal balance and equity among states.
At a time when India must prioritise fiscal prudence and governance efficiency, expanding the size of legislative bodies may not be the most prudent course of action. We respectfully urge the Government to:
- Reconsider and defer the proposed increase in the number of Members of Parliament and State Legislatures.
- Focus on improving efficiency, transparency, and accountability within the existing system.
Campaign Call
“Efficient Leadership, Not Increased Numbers”
“Stronger Systems, Not Larger Structures”
We submit this petition in the larger national interest.
