The Issue

Disparities in healthcare access, particularly preventative care and wellness checks for women, continue to be an increasing concern in San Antonio, TX. A recent study found that there are disparities in healthcare between women and mothers who reside in low and high-socioeconomic status areas in San Antonio, which contribute to higher rates of health complications, specifically in the zip code 78207, which is south of the city. This is a social justice issue affected by factors such as income, insurance status, location, and race. Texas has one of the highest uninsured rates in the country. Around 18% o females ages 19-64 in Texas are uninsured, compared with a national average of only 11%. Women often forgo their annual wellness visits, mammograms, Pap tests and other preventative screenings for cost reasons. Women who live in a low-income household are much less likely to receive routine preventive care than women with more income. Early detection through routine wellness exams and Pap screenings can improve health outcomes, as well as change the patient’s outcome entirely. Health insurance will determine if an individual participates in preventative care or forgoes. Preventative measures are essential for early
detection of cervical cancer, and overall reproductive health. This disparity in healthcare calls for  an urgent change, as 91% of women highlight the importance of removing barriers to accessing health, having a comprehensive preventative care plan and affordability.

Intervention: Free mobile wellness events. In order to increase social justice and enhance
the quality of life for the people in San Antonio, TX, medical care must move beyond the walls,
both physical and financial.Particularly into affected neighborhoods such as zip code 78207.

Action Plan: We suggest holding free community wellness events right inside zip code
78207.

When we shift the place of care into the neighborhood, we change the process by removing costs
and transport barriers. Addressing those barriers, adding education and access to healthcare we
fill in the gaps.
