The Issue

A Nightmare in Berrien County: Why We Must Act Now     Mental health is not just neglected at the Berrien County Jail; it's actively disregarded, leading to horrific consequences. My story is a stark example of a system that failed me and continues to fail others.   I should have been taken to a hospital the moment I arrived. Instead, despite suffering from severe Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Bipolar Disorder, and other mental health conditions, I endured an unimaginable 50 hours in custody. Covered in sweat and tears from medication withdrawal, I was stripped naked, isolated in a padded cell without water, food, or medical care. There was no toilet, and I was forced to lie in my own waste. Without my essential medications, my condition rapidly deteriorated. My mother's desperate intervention saved my life. I lost 10 pounds in just two days and was severely dehydrated. I am not exaggerating when I say I could have died. This isn't just about my personal ordeal; it's about a pervasive crisis at the Berrien County Jail. Inmates awaiting trial — individuals legally presumed innocent — are subjected to appalling conditions that violate fundamental human rights and civil liberties. We have a legal and moral obligation to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the custody of the law. The Berrien County Jail must be held accountable. They must provide humane care to all inmates awaiting trial, ensuring access to necessary medications, adequate medical attention, and basic needs like food and clean water. People like me, suffering from mental health disorders, should not be subjected to further trauma by the very system meant to safeguard our rights. This is not an isolated issue. Human Rights Watch and other advocacy groups consistently criticize jails across the USA for failing to meet humane treatment standards. The U.S. Department of Justice itself has reported that inadequate medical care and food harm inmates and jeopardize facility safety. It's time for the leaders of Berrien County – including the Sheriff's Department, Board of Commissioners, and local community stakeholders – to step up. They must enforce policies that prioritize humane treatment, including regular staff training on mental health awareness and crisis intervention. I urge you to sign this petition. Demand an immediate change in Berrien County Jail’s policies and procedures. Together, we can build a justice system that honors human dignity and advocates for the rights of our most vulnerable citizens. Your support can make a significant difference in our community.
