What is "Supergirl"?
Supergirl is an American superhero fiction action-adventure drama television series that premiered in 2015. It is based on the DC Comics character Supergirl (Kara Zor-El), the biological cousin to Superman and one of the last surviving Kryptonians. The 20-episode season follows Kara Danvers aka. Supergirl and her friends on thier adventures against evil.
"Supergirl" was noticeably absent from CBS' list of renewed series this past March.
The importance of "Supergirl"
"If we were to have a female president, we'd talk about her gender first, but ultimately we're going to see her as the president, and I think that's the same thing with Supergirl. She just is an incredible, strong, brave, smart ass-kicker, and so it's great that she's female, but she's really just getting the bad guy every week." - executive producer Ali Adler.
Young women have few superheroes to look up to, and I never really realized how much I needed a hero like Supergirl before I got it. With a simple scroll through Supergirl's Facebook page (which has about 6.5 million likes less than the Superman page), you can find several comments where people claim that Supergirl is important to both them or their children. Supergirl is the hero that I'd definitely like to have my children look up to in the future.
In addition, "Supergirl" does get credit for being more diverse than most shows. "It’s unusual to have four powerful women: the two Danvers women, Supergirl’s aunt and the newspaper boss. I also like that they made Jimmy/James Olsen into a black man who is smart and insightful." The cast is perfectly balanced, and the adorkable Mellisa Benoist is Supergirl.
Many shows struggle to find themselves in the first season, and Supergirl is definitely one of the shows that deserves to prove itself. Recent news have been about a possible move to the CW, but as long as it will be renewed, we will be content with it. Let us show the producers that we care about this show, the cast and the crew. Supergirl has saved millions of people, now it is time for us to save her. Keep calm and #SaveSupergirl!
