Bengaluru is Turning Unlivable - Government Must Act! #ChangeBengaluru
The Issue
News Articles, Hashtags and Studies from IISc this year - "Bangalore to be unlivable within next five years."
Please Read - "Why is Bengaluru so Unlivable these days?" to get more detailed Insights on Unsustainable Issues in Bangalore. But, there's not much we can do if our Government doesn't step up to the plate.
Bangalore is always recognized for it's best climate conditions, lakes and greenery. But today, All of that is at decline. And, due to Government's Ignorance in Planning and Development, it's a "Horror Show" for working people everyday.
We're facing terrible day to day issues with Damaged Roads, Huge Traffic Jams, Unsafe Water Supply, Polluted Lakes, Garbage on Roads, Non-Affordable Homes, High Security Deposits, Flooding, Decreasing Natural Water Bodies, Agriculture and Greenery etc.
A lot of people have tried raising their voice asking Government to make changes with campaigns such as #SaveWhitefield, but no real changes have been observed over the years.
What can we do to Make Bangalore more Livable?
Ever Wondered, with so many solutions available why is it, that our Government chooses nothing to do?
Government Must Act! This city needs it now more than ever! And here are the Government bodies that can make it happen:
Dear BBMP,
(Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika)
- Please, Fix 3-4 inches deep and up to 1-4 meters wide Potholes and Broken Roads that we have on even the busiest routes in the city. These issues must not exist on the City's main roads. They cause traffic to slow down or maneuver suddenly to cause accidents. The deep potholes on the road are not even visible during the rain/flood and are a major cause for accidents/traffic jams.
- If you ask your Contractors to Dig Up a Developed Road for maintenance or work, please make sure you get them to fix it back up immediately after they're done. 90% of the time they leave those roads broken for months and years to come
- The manholes must all be covered with a proper lid that is perfectly leveled with respect to the ground. It doesn't make sense to have manholes placed in middle of the roads and then have them closed with a lid which is 3 inches above ground like a lousy bump. This is so dangerous that it can cause vehicles to trip/go off balance. Which is why vehicles slow down, suddenly maneuver or leave that side of the road unoccupied while driving. Apparent reason for Traffic Jams.
- Not having Waste Disposal Containers, causes for people to dispose off their waste all over the roads and in the water bodies until the BBMP workers come next morning to pick it up. This is not sustainable as it leaves the place stinky, dirty, and is harmful for animals feeding on them.
This issue can be resolved by placing Two types of Colored Disposal Containers at every spot in the city - one for collecting Organic waste and another for plastic/recyclables. This has to be implemented right, by writing instructions on these containers and taking out frequent television/newspaper ads to educate people how to use them. At the same time, enforcing law/fine would prevent people from mis-using/making a wrongful disposal.
Dear BWSSB,
(Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board)
- BWSSB and UDD (Urban Development Department) must enforce Rainwater Harvesting and help Restore Lakes.
Not only the underground water levels are rapidly decreasing but also Borewell water has been tested by Public Health Institute's Water Testing Laboratory and has been proven to have high and dangerous percentages of Nitrate, Arsenic and Iron. It is unsafe for consumption and causes Bone Related Diseases. People with families and children are unsafe under this water supply.
As reported on "The Hindu," It was in 2009, that BWSSB proposed guidelines to impose penalties on those property owner's who do not implement RWH within 1 year Deadline. That deadline is long past and no actions were ever taken because the Government and Ministry of Urban Development has not approved this yet. This cannot wait and must be implemented by the Government immediately
According to an Article on Times of India, "Even if we can recharge 20% of the rainwater Bangalore receives, groundwater problems can be gradually resolved in the coming years." - Sewage, Waste and Chemicals must be eliminated and prevented from mixing up in the Lakes and Water Bodies. It continues to happen with all of us watching. You can easily spot it with white foam and a terrible smell which is out of control in these lakes. This is extremely unhealthy for the people and environment and can be home to viruses such as Dengue and the cases are already on the rise.
Dear BMRCL,
(Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited)
- Instead of falling behind schedule, Government needs to make "Namma Metro Project" far more efficient and regulative. With unbearable traffic and terrible roads all over the city, an overground Public Transportation is the only escape. It shouldn't take a decade to build 5 metro stations like it is right now. Let's step up and complete this project so vehicles on the roads can be reduced, fuel can be saved and economy can be improved.
Dear Siddaramiah,
(Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka)
- Please enforce the Model Tenancy Act 2015 to help relieve the Tenants from paying High Advance/Security Deposits to the Home Owners.
Model Tenancy Act was first proposed/drafted by MHUPA (Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation) in 2011 and was then further improvised in 2015.
It prevents home owners from collecting an amount any more than 3 times the amount of rent in advance/security deposit (Under Section 11). This is out for consideration to State and Central Governments and Karnataka could for sure use one to help make renting houses more affordable.
Dear BDA, BMRDA, UDD,
(Bangalore Development Authority)
(Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority)
(Urban Development Department
- Please, stop giving Construction Permits for areas without a Proper Road Infrastructure.
In greed of money & taxes, government is rushing to shove Construction Permits in builders' mouths without any planning or infrastructure for roads & trees. This is what's causing Traffic Mayhem on the road.
If you pack up a place with houses for 2000 families in an area, and road for only 1000 vehicles... Simple Math Says - City will be Choked Up! - Please, put in place proper drainage systems or canals underneath the footpaths or on the side of the road to prevent roads from Flooding.
Drainage System helps fix three issues - Flooding, Damaged Roads and Depleting City's Beautiful Lakes
Getting rid of rain water from the road increases the age of the Roads by far more as rainwater is majorly responsible for seeping into the layers & weakening them only for the heavy vehicles to break them up easily. This will also help decrease the amount of labor and taxpayer's money spent on maintenance of the roads every year.
Not only that, but by developing Proper Drainage Systems, the rainwater can be driven into the water bodies to help restore the City's Lakes and Natural Beauty. - A step forward to Smart Waste Management is to invest in products such as Bioneer from Excel Industries which helps convert Organic Waste into Compost/High Quality Manure within 24 HRS which then can be sold to farmers at low prices/cost. This would also help the Agriculture at the same time. Developmental Government Bodies should take an initiative and use the developmental land for projects such as these and install treatment plants. Better than selling that land to Real Estate Tycoons.
- Help restore Lakes and approve BWSSB's RWH penalty regime.
- Please, stop selling Bangalore's land to Real Estate Tycoons and instead use it for developmental projects such as Renewable Energy & Affordable Housing. Result of you selling out the majority of land in Bangalore to Real Estate for Condos and Luxury Apartments has effected the city enormously. Common working people cannot afford homes easily in the City because prices are sky high. And this has also lead to the major decline in the Lakes this city once had. Developing Government Affordable Housing for common working people will help the city economically and will make it easier for people to live, reside and work.
Bangalore could sure use a Change. Please Sign to help Get this Petition out There!
