Make Ben and Jerry vegan icecream use ethically sourced oil instead of ANY palm oil
The Issue
Palm Oil causes so much deforestation, ecological/ environmental destruction/ disturbance and many animal rights issues. As vegan consumers vegans want a proper vegan ice cream doing the lest harm to animals it can, even though the company is not vegan supply and demand of vegan products is vital to influence the market and make veganism open to more people. We DO want people buying and promoting this vegan ice cream (most of us) but we don't want to be harming monkeys in the process that is why YOU should sign this and let Ben and Jerrys KNOW we want them to change the ingredients, sign this , don't harass the company but make it clear to them and show them the petition. You know you love animals , you are vegan so fight for them sign this and show you want to promote vegan options but you want them to really be as realistically cruelty free as possible. Animals are burned alive on these plantations , hacked up , shot and poisoned, Nearly 90% of orangutan habitat has already disappeared and within 15 years due to palm oil plantations. This also effects tigers , other primates, rhinos and SO many animals and this is not excusable.
Animals are also sold to the pet trade and poorly funded zoo's as the countries this happens in don't always have the law to protect these animals and their fates.
To guarantee "sustainable palm oil" is a very difficult goal as their are too many loop holes in this practise and although it is theoretically possible it would be fa more trustable and safe to go with a sustainable, fair trade oil like coconut, rapeseed etc which must not have history of animal abuse e.g using monkeys to pick produce and must be fairtrade!
As much as there are issues with things like soy as well, most soy is used for animal feed and it can be ethically sourced but palm oil which is "sustainable" is not grown in open fields and is certified by a company made up of banks, retailers , palm oil producers and sellers as well as environmental & social. In fact plantations workers crashed a 2013 meeting with "Don't certify exploitation"
90 percent of the palm oil is sourced from Malaysia and Indonesia, there are still protests in palm oil for human rights issues people are even evicted from their land and arrested for standing up for their rights, and workers are often using hazardous chemicals, child labour, abuse of contracts and there is some illegal land seizing going on aswell.
The use of pesticides, burning of peat land and cutting down trees make this clearly bad for animals and the environment. Indonesia has green house gases sky rocketing due to palm oil plantations now ranking as 7th in the row of countries with highest amounts. Burning all the peat land in sometimes just one country can be compared to 9 years of average global fossil fuel use.
