Tackle declining bee population in Northern Ireland

The Issue

We the undersigned petition Belfast city council to take the steps outlined below to help declining bee populations in Northern Ireland.

*We ask that all parks managed by the council refrain from cutting the grass during the month of May every year. This will allow more wildflowers like daisy's and dandelions to thrive , which will in turn increase pollen supply for bees. Allowing them to store more honey from wild flowers .It will also help other pollinators thrive such as butterflies.

* We ask that the council diverts funds usually paid for up keeping of lawns during this month to plant bee friendly flower beds in local parks instead . Flowers such as crocus' or sweet peas would be ideal. it will greatly improve a bees chances of survival over winter if they have access to a greater abundance of flowers and help increase the bee population. This will also help make the parks more visually attractive to visitors .

Without action 21 species of these important pollinators could go extinct in Northern Ireland. Bees are crucial for pollination of food. A third of food production is dependant on these pollinators .

By taking the above steps the council can take proactive steps to help tackle the issue of the declining bee population.

Thank you for your consideration in this matter
