Behind the Smiles: Protect Jasper’s Workers

Behind the Smiles: Protect Jasper’s Workers
The Issue
Behind the tourist charm of Jasper lies an invisible workforce—immigrants, international students, and young Canadians who serve food, clean rooms, guide experiences, and keep the town running year-round. These workers are the backbone of Jasper’s hospitality industry, yet many face late payments, unsafe working conditions, a lack of legal employment contracts, and pressure to accept mistreatment in silence. Without proper training or protective standards, they are too often undervalued and overlooked.
When workers are denied their rights, everyone suffers. It compromises not just their well-being, but the integrity of Jasper’s tourism economy. Fair wages, on-time payments, safe environments, and clear contracts are not privileges—they are legal and moral obligations. If nothing changes, we risk normalizing exploitation in one of Canada’s most beloved destinations. But if we act now, Jasper can become a model town for ethical tourism and community respect. After recent crises like wildfires and evacuations, Jasper has shown the power of unity and community resilience. Now, it’s time to apply that same energy to the people who welcome every visitor with a smile.
We urge local and provincial authorities to not only investigate current workplace practices, but also to launch public awareness campaigns focused on educating immigrants and seasonal workers about their employment rights. Language-accessible materials, community sessions, and workplace inspections are critical steps toward ensuring every worker knows what they are entitled to—and feels safe asking for it. Let’s make Jasper a place where hospitality begins with fairness.
