Add Black and LGBTQ+ history to the BSD curriculum

The Issue

The only way to fight ignorance is with knowledge. Black and LGBTQ+ history are an integral part of our lives. Many BSD students are BIPOC and/or LGBTQ. It's important to know the roots of these populations and the immense change that had to be fought for in order to get these groups the rights they deserve.

Students should be taught about more Black figures in history than Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. They should learn about Malcolm X, W.E.B. DuBois, the Tulsa Race Massacre, and their impact today. Students should learn about systemic racism, redlining, and Black Wall Street. Students should be taught about Marsha P. Johnson, Stonewall, and other important figures and events in LGBTQ+ history.

These topics aren't political, they are about human rights. Students, K-12, should learn about these events, and how these people impacted the world as it is today. Change the curriculum to teach about people who deserve to have their legacies shared. Change the curriculum to reflect the population of our schools. Change the curriculum to embrace the students who have never been able to learn about someone who is like them.

Add Black and LGBTQ+ history to the curriculum of schools in the Beaverton School District.
