Beauregard, in desperate need of indoor facility for use by various groups.
The Issue
Beauregard is in desperate need of an indoor facility for use by various groups. The youth basketball program has suffered for years with last minute cancellations, denial of use of high school facilities, and shortened seasons due to school sports and sponsored activities. Youth basketball is the foundation of school sports and failure to provide adequate facilities has resulted in decreased participation in school basketball and a lack of knowledge of the game. Youth basketball provides game situations, learned techniques, and teaches sportsmanship to participants early in the age of competitive sports. An indoor facility would provide more for the Beauregard community besides a home to youth basketball. This facility would be able to be used for youth wrestling, cheerleading practices, baseball practices, football walk-through, youth volleyball, boy & girl scouts and as a host facility for recreational sports tournament dinners. In addition to these activities, an indoor facility could be used as a meeting area for important functions such as Lee County Commission district meetings and community meetings, state umpire and referee meetings just to name a few. Lee County Parks could also rent these facilities for various events such as youth birthday parties and tournaments. An indoor facility can be made almost zero maintenance with the installation of concrete floors as opposed to wood flooring and no permanent heating or cooling units. Permanent heating and cooling can be a future upgrade that could be funded from the rental of the indoor facility. A recent bid sheet from Titan Steel Structures provided for a 90x110x22 red iron building for the price of $133,000. An additional $25 per square foot would allow for installation, electrical, and the concrete pad. Total, an indoor facility would be less than $400,000. The overall benefit of this facility to the Beauregard community far outweighs the minimum costs associated with its construction. The youth organizations of Beauregard are willing to help manage an indoor facility and make sure the facility is put to good use by offering opportunities for all athletes, interest groups and the like. Erecting this indoor facility would show great efforts within the community and the aforementioned groups while bringing money back into the community. A strict set of rules and regulations or guidelines would be put into effect for use of said facility upon rental/ use with a fine due if not adhered by.
