Beaufort High School Petition to Restore Mascot/Emblem and Colors to Original
The Issue
In the late 1960s early 1970s three high schools in Beaufort, SC were combined shortly after integration in 1964. The three schools were Beaufort High School, Robert Smalls High School and St. Helena High Schools. Each school had representatives in the decision-making process and in the scope of unity, each school contributed to the foundation of the new school. The name came from Beaufort High School, the mascot/emblem (eagle) came from St. Helena High School and the colors (green and white) came from Robert Smalls High School. This was pivotal in the success of the new school as it combined schools from different demographical areas. Two of the schools were all black schools and one was predominantly white. In 2019 //2020 the mascot/emblem was changed without proper protocol or input from the community. The colors are also being changed. The combining of these schools is a very important part of the history of Beaufort, SC. and as such all aspects should be permanently preserved. We are petitioning the Board of Education to restore the mascot and colors back to the original and permanently retaining the school's name honoring the original agreement. These signatures represent the community including individuals, school alumni, businesses, and politicians. We expect a timely change or at the least the beginning of a serious and transparent dialog about this issue.
