This event is only open to a select group of homeowners, but wouldn't it be beneficial for homeowners across Queensland to be able to watch and hear what is being discussed?
Every homeowner has a different experience. It would be valuable to hear what has worked, what hasn't, and what changes people believe are needed to improve the building industry. These discussions should help shape future reform and ensure homeowners' voices are genuinely heard.
Why not live stream the event?
A live stream would:
• Allow homeowners across Queensland to listen in.
• Provide greater transparency about the issues being discussed.
• Show whether homeowners' concerns and feedback are being acknowledged.
• Demonstrate the QBCC's commitment to meaningful change and accountability.
It's also worth remembering that the Varghese Report (2022) recommended that Queensland's Home Warranty Insurance (HWI) scheme be removed from the QBCC and managed independently by another government body. The recommendation aimed to improve transparency, remove conflicts of interest, and separate the regulator from the administrator of the insurance scheme.
Currently, the QBCC regulates the building industry, collects Home Warranty Insurance premiums, licence fees, and infringement revenue, while also making decisions on Home Warranty Insurance claims. Many homeowners believe these overlapping responsibilities should be separated to strengthen fairness, transparency, and public confidence.
