BE FEARLESS: A Call for Swifties Against Sweeps

BE FEARLESS: A Call for Swifties Against Sweeps

The Issue

Dear Taylor Swift,

As devoted fans and residents of New Orleans, can we ask you a question...? We have to speak now with a heartfelt request. Your upcoming concerts as part of the Eras Tour have generated immense excitement and we are all ready for it, but your tour has  also highlighted a pressing issue that our community knows all too well.

In the past year, New Orleans has made significant strides that have been a long time coming through the Home for Good initiative, successfully housing 592 individuals who were once living on the streets. Unfortunately, Louisiana’s governor Jeff Landry wants a blank space and has deliberately disrupted this progress in an effort to relocate and displace unhoused residents in advance of your concerts in New Orleans. This process is known as a “sweep” because they don’t just ask community members to move, they often throw away personal belongings, including critical items like government documents and letters that could help them find housing, tents, clothing, and food.  On Wednesday, Louisiana State Police removed about 75 unhoused residents from the Central Business District, Superdome, and French Quarter. Many were set to secure housing in the coming weeks, but now find themselves in limbo, as their plans and paperwork have been jeopardized. Their situation is delicate and they can't just shake it off

It is estimated that it would take $10 million to house every person currently experiencing homelessness in our city. With an expected attendance of 150,000 fans across your three concerts, there is the potential to raise funds beyond our wildest dreams. We are enchanted to have you in our city, and your support for these critical resources will help ensure that every person impacted by these recent actions finds stable housing which never goes out of style. We want our unhoused neighbors to live safe and fearless lives.

Your message of love and humanity resonates deeply with us, and your support could provide critical resources to ensure that every person impacted by these recent actions finds stable housing.

We are asking you to join us to speak now and ask you to consider this request. Your kindness and generosity could make a lasting difference in our community.

Call to Action:

Dear reader, we invite all Taylor Swift fans to join us in this effort—not just New Orleans residents! Please sign if you are against these actions taken by Governor Landry to ask Taylor Swift to mastermind the plan to house our residents  – this is better than revenge.

Taylor and fans, we are also asking you to be fearless in your dedication to our cause and consider making a donation to Homes for Good New Orleans for long term housing plans OR donate to Southern Solidarity to provide immediate direct aid to our impacted neighbors. You can also call the Governor’s constituent services office at 225-342-0991 or 844-860-1413 to let them know that their actions are inhumane and counterproductive. Additionally, we encourage you to post photos of yourself at the concert this weekend and share your thoughts on how much this donation would mean to New Orleans. Use the hashtag #SwiftiesAgainstSweeps to spread the word and amplify our message!
