Nadia Lomax started this petition to BCSC and

The time for educational reform is long overdue. Demand that BCSC become an example for schools across the U.S. that inclusive education is possible.

All students should be engaged with conversations about Black history. For years Black students have been told that their history begins and ends with slavery. We created this petition for BCSC to recognize that the key to teaching Black history in our schools is not only acknowledging the hard truths about history but to also help Black students feel empowered by their identities and to teach non-Black students about Black leaders throughout history and how they made an impact even in today’s society. White students should be able to recognize how they might be contributing to white supremacist ideals and how they should strive to grow and educate themselves further on social topics in order to have a future without white supremacist ideology and that promotes social justice and unity.

Not teaching students about Black history is contributing to white supremacy and as a consequence, contributes to hate and violence on black bodies, the mass disenfranchisement of Black men, and leads Black students in our education system to believe that they do not belong in our community. Many students are tired of the white-washed fairy tales and we want to be educated, not lied to. It’s time we reform our education system.

Other demands include:

  • Make Black history a mandatory part of BCSC curriculum
  • Teach proper sex education in health class that includes the LGBTQ+ community
  • Celebrate student diversity in all of its aspects
  • Ensure a non-intimidating environment by removing the uniform from resource officer positions (Keeping their positions in schools, but in plain clothes)
  • Address teacher's implicit bias
  • Hire professional therapists to assist students with mental health as they grow
  • Make at least one family bathroom an option in each school
  • Make it priority to diversify teachers and staff that increases representation within the school system
