BBC - Host a Climate Policy Debate in the run up to the next general election

The Issue

We stand at a pivotal moment in history, where the future of our planet and the well-being of generations to come are at stake. Climate change and environmental issues pose profound challenges that demand immediate attention, commitment, and collaborative action from our political leaders.

As concerned citizens, we believe it is crucial to empower ourselves with knowledge and demand that those who seek to lead our nation address these critical matters.

Today, we are calling on the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) to host a dedicated leadership debate, solely focused on Climate Change and the Environment, during the run-up to the next general election.

The climate crisis is not a distant, hypothetical threat but an urgent and unfolding reality. Extreme weather events, rising sea levels, biodiversity loss, and the devastation of ecosystems are already affecting our planet, communities, and vulnerable populations worldwide. As citizens, we have a right to hear from our potential leaders about their comprehensive strategies and immediate actions to address these pressing challenges.

We firmly believe that a leadership debate centered on Climate Change and the Environment will serve several critical purposes:

  1. Informing the Public: By devoting an entire debate to these issues, the BBC will provide an opportunity for candidates to present their visions, policies, and concrete plans to mitigate and defend against climate change, protect our environment, and transition towards a sustainable future.
  2. Fostering Accountability: Holding a dedicated debate on climate and environmental issues will ensure that leaders are held accountable for their positions, promises, and track records regarding environmental stewardship.
  3. Raising Awareness: Such a debate will raise awareness among the public about the urgency of climate action and the need for collective responsibility in safeguarding our planet.
  4. Encouraging Collaboration: Climate change is a global challenge that requires united efforts. Through this debate, we can assess how our leaders plan to collaborate with other nations, scientific communities, and businesses to find innovative solutions.
  5. Engaging Young People: Young people demonstrated remarkable dedication to the climate cause. By hosting this debate, we will encourage and inspire young voters to participate actively in the political process and engage with issues that directly impact their future.

We understand that the BBC has a tradition of impartiality and integrity in its coverage of political events. We trust that the BBC will take our concerns seriously and recognise the critical importance of this topic for the well-being of our society and the planet.

This petition calls on the BBC to take a leading role in promoting a robust and informative leadership debate focused solely on Climate Change and the Environment. Let this debate be an instrumental platform for leaders to articulate their visions, policies, and actions, while empowering the public to make informed choices in the next general election.
