More Crossing Guards in Bayonne, NJ
More Crossing Guards in Bayonne, NJ

On Friday, September 10th I watched my young daughter roll off the hood of a car to the pavement. Thankfully she is alive but what about the next child. We need more Crossing Guards in Bayonne, New Jersey.
My 7 year old daughter and wife were struck by a car making a left onto Avenue C. The man that struck them said that it was not his fault, because the sun was in his eyes.
My wife (the Mother) was struck and spun by the passenger side of the car as she tried desperately to pull our daughter to safety. My daughter was pulled out of her mothers' hand, onto the hood of the car, and thrown onto the pavement. Myself and our almost 2 year old son were a step behind and fortunately turned out of the way just in time.
Luckily, no one was not killed this time. However there were multiple witnesses, including other children walking to school, crossing the same light right behind us. They cannot unsee what happened, nor can anyone unhear our cries of despair and anguish. We were one block from home, one block from the school, the same path I walk as a child. This should never have happened.
Our local councilmember has tried for years to reinstate a crossing guard at that corner, even crossing kids himself; only to be told he could get in trouble by the former chief of police (current public safety director). A study decided that a crossing guard was not neccessary at that busy intersection. We hope this petition will change their minds about that need.
Public Safety Director said they will conduct a town survey to see if it is feasible to station a crossing guard there. No time line has been set.
Please take a moment to sign and share this petition. No child should have to see or experience this while walking to or from school.
