Unblock Wattpad and other freewriting websites on school computers (NOT ALL SOCIAL MEDIA)
The Issue
Here recently, we've gotten a large health scare in America. Corona is forcing everyone to stay at home and cower. Those of us with broken electronics can't get them fixed since the proper businesses have shut down. Children who need to learn now have to be taught at home. What scares me most is the fact that creative minds such as myself can't really get the proper support we need to create and share our work anymore. We can't do it in person because we have to stay home, and we can't do it online because the school blocks websites like Wattpad and Quotev.
On any normal day, I would understand this. We have our own electronics and our own wifi at home for this reason. Problem is, this isn't a normal day. Not everyone has the ability to even repair their own electronics or go outside without getting nervous during the epidemic. They're stuck trying to use free wifi in public on a school issued laptop.
That's why it's a problem. We need a place to publish our writing, to work out the jitters by creating our own world where this isn't happening. Or at least escape into someone else's. We need to be able to find and post new stories online so that we don't feel like we're going coo-coo with cabin fever! Wattpad, Quotev, and many other YA websites like them are perfect for such a job. Therefore, for the sake of those who can't work the mobile versions and don't have a computer their parents allow them on for more than homework, websites like Wattpad need to be unblocked by the school.
The school can continue to monitor activity, so it's not like anyone would be reading nsfw content on a school issued laptop. Besides, schools should be promoting activity such as reading and writing. Blocking sites that allow this is as heinous as blocking Cool Math Games, which is a whole other issue entirely.
To destroy a society, one must not burn a building, just burn all the books. That is basically the summary of a book called Fahrenheit 451. Taking away the ability to read these books may as well be the exact same thing as destroying them, and removing the ability to share them halts a story's creation in ways one can't imagine. Everyone stuck at home unable to use Quotev on their phone properly or write on Wattpad without a proper keyboard is left without any creative outlet or safezone to enter. It's only a matter of time before we all get tired of the same cartoons on Netflix and the few books we keep at home. It won't be long before Bay County students have read all their books twice over and gotten tired of their tiny screens. Even the creatives such as myself have started to feel the effects of art block, which damages our ability to express ourselves creatively not just now but later on when we need to rely on our creative talents. It's only a matter of time before the window closes and we lose ourselves to anxiety and stress.
