Reforms at Maple Grove Senior High

The Issue

This petition is fighting for changes to be made in Maple Grove Senior High and within our District 279.

It is advocating for BIPOC (Black Indigenous Students of Color), LGBTQA+, disabled, and all other groups that are marginalized within our school system.

It is evident that students are ready for these changes as many showed up and organized the March on Grove this past summer, in addition to the many students who have been engaged with the “reformmgsh” campaign over the past few months. However, it is time that the District begins to listen to these student voices as well as implement the changes they are demanding.

Efforts have already been made to work with administrators and Principal Becker on these issues but their responses were dismissive, claiming that,  “efforts to ensure equitable student achievement and to provide a school environment that is safe, welcoming and respectful have been underway for years”- Principal Becker. Yet, many students feel this isn’t true unless you are white, cisgender, straight, and able-bodied.

This is why these issues must be taken up to the District because of students’ safety, comfort, and well-being matters.

Listed below are just some of the reforms that students want to see at Maple Grove Senior High.

  1. MGSH as a whole needs to fight to educate LGBTQ+ history and current anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. This education should include comprehensive sex education for LGBTQ+ individuals, too.
  2. A core class should teach students which modern forms of racism exist now (Prison pipeline, healthcare inequality, educational barriers, police brutality, disenfranchisement, etc.)
  3. There should be fewer suspensions for students of color (should be given as a last strike)
  4. There should be an outreach to find and adequately fund teachers of color for core classes at MGSH
  5. Gender-neutral bathrooms should be installed on every floor, and they should be accessible to students
  6. Disability Services needs to be created
