Release Aaliyah's Music to Streaming Platforms #FreeAaliyah + ALL Blackground Artists
The Issue
Blackground Records, founded by Barry and Jomo Hankerson in the 90's, was home to some of our favorite artists and classic sounds including: Toni Braxton, Tank, Timbaland & Magoo, and most notably Aaliyah. Following Aaliyah's untimely death, Blackground saw a decline in success and eventually ceased to exist in the way that it did while she was alive. Unfortunately, for the fans, that also meant the music that we fell in love with from the record company became more and more obscure.
Today, in 2020, streaming is the most convenient and common way to tune into artists you love and find new music that fits your listening preferences. While artists will sometimes forgo streaming for a short time to gain buzz or more monetary compensation, this practice isn't a common one as a long time resolution. For over 15 years, fans have begged, pleaded, and think pieced they why's of the missing Aaliyah and Blackground catalogs. As it stands today, we no longer care about the background stories of why these musical masterpieces aren't available on streaming platforms--we simply want them added.
Aaliyah spent majority of her life pouring into her music and loving on her fans. As a fan and someone impacted by her music, I don't want to see her legacy die. In this digital age, the lack of her presence on streaming platforms, unfortunately, threatens the strength of her legacy.
Sign this petition today and let Barry and Jomo Hankerson know that we want the sounds of our musical history added to streaming platforms for our memories and for the musical edutainment of our current generation and generations to come.
