Attached to this petition is an open letter to Television Broadcasts Limited 電視廣播有限公司 (a.k.a "TVB"), demanding accountability over its racist depiction of Filipino domestic workers through black/brownfacing and mockery of accent.

This open letter discusses further how the TV series, "Barrack O'Karma 1968" continues to proliferate harmful stereotypes of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, this depiction of the community being not the city's first. Moving forward, we humbly demand accountability from TVB, the producers of Barrack O'Karma 1968, and from Franchesca Wong and Lam King Ching.

What we hope to achieve through this petition:

  1. A public apology from the producers of the show, the concerned actress herself, and co-star for condoning brownface by posting on social media (Instagram)
  2. Re-making scenes with better representation. Hong Kong has proven that its entertainment sector has the capacity and capabilities to do better with their representations of domestic workers (e.g., Crisel Consunji on Still Human (2018), Miles Sible on Ateh (2021) and We Don’t Dance for Nothing (2022)).
  3. We request that cultural sensitivity training be a fundamental part of development within the entertainment sector. This can take many forms, for instance, consulting people from communities producers wish to represent on screen. In effect, this would create well-rounded representations of the different communities in Hong Kong that do not pertain to one certain stereotype i.e. the idea that all Filipinos and Indonesians are domestic workers, all South Asians work in food delivery services.

With love and respect, we encourage all to read our open letter and sign this petition to raise awareness and enact changes in the narratives of the domestic worker community and other systematically marginalised communities.

Thank you. Maraming salamat.
