Denounce 'Lay Holocaust to Rest' Question
Denounce 'Lay Holocaust to Rest' Question
The Issue
On January 25, 2015, days before International Holocaust Remembrance Day, BBC's The Big Question host Nicky Campbell hosted an episode centered around the question: "Is the time coming to lay the Holocaust to rest?" Campbell also posted this question on Twitter.
(This question can be seen here: https://twitter.com/bbcbigquestions/status/559289722003263488)
Throughout the debate, Campbell is heard asking what is unique about the Holocaust and whether it makes sense to put "old men" (ie. former Nazis) on trial for what they did.
On a day of mourning and remembrance of the 11 million innocent men, women, and children who were brutally murdered during the Holocaust, such a question is more than objectionable; it is reprehensible and morally repugnant.
On March 3, 2015, when Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu addressed congress regarding a possible deal with Iran on its nuclear program, Netanyahu referred to Elie Wiesel, the notable Holocaust survivor who attended the speech, saying, "I wish I could promise you, Elie, that the lessons of history have been learned. I can only urge the leaders of the world not to repeat the mistakes of the past."
Jeremy Bowen of the BBC live-tweeted, "Once again Netanyahu plays Holocaust card". This obviously anti-Semitic statement implies that not only did Netanyahu use the Holocaust for personal gain and leverage, but that the Holocaust is overused, overplayed, and does not deserve to be compared with threats to Jews and Israel's survival in the modern day.
We the undersigned demand that Baron Hall of Birkenhead, Director- General of the BBC, Rona Fairhead, Chairwoman of the BBC Trust, and Danny Cohen, Director of BBC Television renounce, condemn, and distance themselves from this anti-Semitic rhetoric coming from inside the corporation they run.
We further demand that Baron Hall of Birkenhead, Rona Fairhead, Danny Cohen, and the Executive Board of the BBC take disciplinary action against Nicky Campbell and Jeremy Bowen, and clarify the standards by which all BBC personnel have to abide in doing so.
