Demand Barnard to Adjust Financial Aid Packages for Students Who Were Affected By COVID
The Issue
Several students of Barnard’s incoming class of 2025 received a statement from the Barnard Financial Aid Office saying they would not receive more financial aid because their aid packages were based on their 2019 financial reports and not 2020’s. Many students had parents who lost their jobs in 2020 because of COVID-19 and/or suffered severe income loss. This makes it nearly impossible to afford a net tuition price that is near/exceeds their current income. We are requesting that the Barnard Financial Aid Office offer financial aid packages that are adjusted to match each student’s current circumstances as a result COVID-19. This is disproportionately affecting Barnard’s low-income and first-generation college students. As an institution that claims to meet 100% demonstrated need, we demand accountability for unkept promises.
