Tell SEIU Local 99 To Represent All LAUSD Employees Fairly
Tell SEIU Local 99 To Represent All LAUSD Employees Fairly
The Issue
Tell SEIU Local 99 to represent the Special Education Paraprofessionals of LAUSD with the same concern and respect they provide the other LAUSD bargaining units that SEIU 99 represents.
LAUSD employs approximately 8,500 Special Education Paraprofessional who work tirelessly with students that range in age age from 3 to 23 and have various medical, psychological, cognitive and/ or learning disabilities.
When the school year starts, the Special Ed. Paraprofessionals will be required to sign and accept a new attendance policy. The policy appears to be punitive in nature as it is addressed only to the Special Ed. Paraprofessionals. Not Bus Drivers, Cafeteria workers, Custodian, Teacher Assistants, or Play Ground supervision all SEIU 99 represented employee positions. Also the language in the policy is in conflict with the current Unit B contract.
SEIU Local 99 is fully aware of this situation and had for a time posted the memo on their Facebook page.
As a Special Education Paraprofessionals, I am signing this petition to tell Barbara Torres, President and Max Arias, Executive Director of SEIU 99 to use all resources available to stop this policy from being implemented until there has been an open and transparent dialogue explaining why the policy is needed for only this group and the language can be aligned with the contract that is in place.
I am signing this petition even though I am not a Special Education Paraprofessional because I support their right to receive the same service that the other represented employees receive. They also deserve to be respected and supported as a valuable part of the schools community.
