Many victims of domestic violence can't/won't leave their abuser because they don't want to leave their pets behind.  Abusing or even the threat of abusing a beloved family pet can be part of the vicious cycle of domestic violence.  While individual states have begun to address this problem, many domestic violence shelters remain unable to take in and support these pets.  As a result, victims are unable to receive the help and escape that they desperately need, which could ultimately cost them their lives. I call upon our leaders in Washington to not let this bill die in committee once again and pass S-1559/HR-1258, which would allow grants to be provided to help these shelters be able to shelter both people and pets that are victims of domestic violence. The individual senators and congressmen listed in this petition are the heads of the committees in the Senate and House of Representatives that this bill was sent to and they decide when or even if this bill is ever voted on.  It is issues like these that often fall to the wayside but there are countless victims of domestic violence living in shelters throughout the country and nobody in that situation should be forced to decide whether to escape their abuser and leave their pet behind or keep being abused to protect the pet. If you have a pet or know someone who has a pet and you are reading this, just imagine how hard it would be for you or your friends or loved ones to make such a decision This is not a problem that knows income, poverty, race, or age, but it is a problem that many Americans are unfortunately struggling with and if we have the opportunity to help save and rebuild lives, it is our opportunity to do so.
