Include Women From American History on U.S. Paper Currency
The Issue
Did you know that in the entire history of our nation only 3 women have ever been featured on any form of US currency?
Did you know that it would only take one word from President Obama or Treasury Secretary Jack Lew in order to honor a woman from American history on a piece of our paper money?
Last August, President Obama publicly endorsed the idea of including an American woman on our currency, and yet he has taken no action to direct members of his administration to make that a reality. Now, in his final two years in the White House, President Obama has the chance to cement his legacy and end the centuries-long lack of recognition for the many women who have helped to shape our country.
As a mother to two daughters, it makes me sad to think that little girls around our country do not see themselves represented in the faces on the money they use to buy their lunches at school or that appears under their pillow after a visit from the tooth fairy. When my daughters ask me to tell them who the people in those pictures are, I want to be able to tell them diverse stories about our nation’s past, and inspire them to know that everyone has the power to influence our world -- no matter their race, ethnicity, or gender.
So many amazing American women have contributed to our country’s history: Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth, Clara Barton and many more. Yet, we don’t honor a single one on our currency -- currency that is shared and recognized around the world.
President Obama can change that.
Please stand with me and my daughters to ask President Obama to take a stand and direct Treasury Secretary Jack Lew to include a woman on paper money.
