The Issue

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that allows nationals of EBOLA affected countries: Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, to remain in the United States for 18 months, and receive an Employment Authorization Document to lawfully work in the United States from November 21, 2014 to May 21, 2016. The government is yet to mail out renewal reminder, which is usually done 60 to 100 days in advance. Nationals of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone on TPS will go out of status if their TPS is not extended/renewed. This means nationals of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone on TPS could be arrested, detained and deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Previously, the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared the three West African countries EBOLA free at least three times, only to see the deadly virus resurface again. On January 14, 2016, WHO declares again the end of the most recent outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Liberia and says all known chains of transmission have been stopped in the West African Country. But the Organization says the job is not over, “more flare-ups are expected.” All three countries are still in the heightened surveillance period to ensure that any new cases are identified quickly before they can spread to other people. This period is designed by the WHO to ensure no hidden chains of transmission have been missed and to detect any new flare-ups of the disease. It is not yet safe for nationals of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone on TPS to return back to their countries. EBOLA is still a threat today. Please tell President Obama, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, and Director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Leon Rodriguez to extend TPS for nationals of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
