The Issue

I am sharing a personal perspective that highlights a critical loophole in our system, backed by firsthand knowledge of serious infractions. I am aware of an individual who pled guilty to a sex crime against a child who was also granted an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license in New Jersey. That license was issued by NJ Department of Health, even when the individual admitted to their crime that requires them to register with Megan’s Law (a registry for sex offenders). This lack of transparency squares off with public values and safety, particularly since it allows offenders unrestricted access to the vulnerable members of our community.

It's time we drive attention to bill NJ A3077 and garner support for it. This legislation should prohibit the current practice of granting sex offenders EMT licenses in New Jersey. Introducing rigorous background checks in the license acquisition process will ensure that our first responders are trustworthy individuals who can safeguard the well-being of our society, particularly the vulnerable groups.

This alarming loophole is not just a matter of public safety, it also fundamentally undermines the trust between community members and the thousands of good natured healthcare providers. Sex crimes are serious offenses with traumatic impacts on victims. It's unjust that individuals with such a past can secure a license that grants them access to incredibly vulnerable situations.

This petition will be submitted to members of New Jersey legislature on state and local levels.
