A CALL FOR BANKS AND GLOBE GCASH TO TEMPORARILY WAIVE THEIR INTERBANK TRANSACTION FEES

The Issue

Since the onslaught of typhoons last October, several organizations have started donation drives for those who were affected. Donations in cash are made through bank transfers, and although there are same-bank transfers, there are also donation drives that have limited banking options.

BPI to BPI transfers, for example, cost P10 per transaction; whereas, BPI to GCash costs P25 per transfer.

Now imagine if four persons made one donation each from their bank to Gcash, with P25 transaction fee. That would total to P100 (4 x P25), an amount which in itself is sufficient to buy relief goods, or, when consolidated with hundreds of daily transfers, would comprise thousands of pesos.

By waiving these fees, like how banks did during the ECQ, we can encourage more donors, even those who are interested to share from the meager* amounts in their accounts.

Even students are interested in sharing, but the interbank fees discourage them.

We understand that we need these banking charges to help our banking industry and the economy to stay afloat, but what good would it make if the people for whom the good economy is intended, are no longer around?

*NO AMOUNT IS TOO SMALL. EVERY PESO WE CAN SHARE MATTERS.
