After a relatively short campaign south of the border, the U.S. Treasury promised to celebrate a noteworthy American woman on the face of a new bank note. While this new article explains that the U.S. is now grappling with the challenge of selecting one woman to fit the bill, things are moving quickly compared to Canada! As you all know, I started this petition in July 2013. Neither the Minister of Finance Bill Morneau or Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz have even committed to honouring Canadian women at all - let alone on the face of our bills! Why not?
As one of you stated so well on our petition page, “It’s ridiculous that this even requires discussion and petition in the 21st century, it’s a national embarrassment for Canada.”
It's also interesting to compare the situation in Canada to that of the UK, where Mark Carney (who purged Canadian women from the back of the $50) fixed a similar problem within a month of arriving for his new job as governor of the Bank of England. Responding to a petition signed by about 35,000 people, Carney announced that author Jane Austen would appear on the face of a new note - and even unveiled a design. Meanwhile, nearly 65,000 people have signed the petition calling for Canadian women on bank notes. The only action to date, if you can call it action, is that Mr. Poloz has promised public consultations. Public consultations on whether or not to honour Canadian women as well as men on our bills????
Because it's 2016, I hope we can count on the new federal government to take action.
