The United States is moving quickly with plans for an American woman to be featured on bank notes. The U.S. Treasury Department will soon announce the name of the American heroine to be celebrated, and its website indicates she will be a “champion of democracy.” In response to a relatively short but high-profile campaign (including a petition) calling for an American woman to be featured on new bills in 2020, the U.S. government soon made a firm commitment to take action. Meanwhile, the petition calling for a commitment to celebrate Canadian women on bank notes has been signed by over 55,750 people since it was launched two years ago. But the calls for recognizing the contributions of Canadian women on bank notes have fallen on deaf ears. Why are Stephen Poloz, Governor of the Bank of Canada, and Finance Minister Joe Oliver (responsible for approving bank notes) ignoring our petition? As in the US, we’re not calling for new bank notes featuring female historical figures to start rolling off the presses next week. Only a commitment to celebrate Canadian women on our bills!
“I can't believe we need a petition for this, but here's another name.” posted Bill Gordon when signing our petition this month. Hard to believe indeed, but please share the petition widely with friends and colleagues, media contacts, candidates for the upcoming federal election, etc. to ask for support and/or publicity for our campaign.
As Joanne Vannicola wrote when she signed the petition recently, “Enough is enough. Time to represent those of us who make up more than half the population of this country. Period. Do it.”
