End the BACON BASH – Live Animal Abuse

The Issue

The BACON BASH (formerly Wild Hog Explosion) is a festival in Bandera, TX centered around the disrespect for and abuse of wild pigs. It takes place every year in March and involves cooking and eating dead decaying bodies and then an abusive entertainment event known as wild hog bagging. Pigs are trapped in the wild, have their tusks ripped out and are then brought into and used and abused for this event - babies, children and adult pigs. Baby pigs are chased around and kicked, dragged, picked up and dropped by large groups of children. After this introductory event, teams of two - children to teens and adults, chase pigs around in the ring and catch them by any means they can and then run roughly with the pig in a bag across a finish line. Many pigs get bloodied and injured from being roughly handled and dragged and from jumping into the metal fence in an effort to escape. All pigs without exception are extremely terrified. Even pigs who are injured and bloodied are reused again and again by additional teams and no pigs at this event have access to food or water. The pigs suffering gets mocked throughout the event and the pigs are all called degrading names like Jennifer Lopig and Sausage Patty.

This event desensitizes children to violence and teaches them that might makes right and that we can discriminate against and harm others if they are a different species than our own. Throughout the event the hogs try to not get put into the ring and when they are in the ring they’re constantly trying to avoid humans and are looking for and trying out ways to escape. Humans who harm feral pigs want the public to believe that these beings are dangerous, but they aren’t. If the pigs were dangerous they’d be attacking the humans, yet this doesn’t happen - so I think we can say which animal is truly dangerous. The organizers try to get people to perceive this as a good event because money gets donated to the library, but the organizers could easily raise money for the local library without causing separation and distress and pain and then death to animals who were just trying to live their lives. In 2019 how are humans still abusing animals for entertainment? Please ask the Bandera Chamber of Commerce to help cancel this event by signing this petition and writing them an email and/or giving them a phone call. People in Texas need to learn to leave animals alone just like they want to be left alone and stop making excuses to harm animals for completely unnecessary reasons. Money raised from the event goes to the local library, so you can ask the library to accept money that's not raised from abusing innocent animals.
