Ban TikTok to Protect Mental Health

I am deeply concerned about the impact TikTok may have on the mental health and wellbeing of children, teenagers, and adults. While many people use the platform for entertainment and creativity, there is growing concern about the potential harm caused by its design and the content it can promote. This petition calls on decision-makers to take action, including considering a ban on TikTok, to better protect vulnerable people.

TikTok’s algorithm is designed to keep users engaged by recommending content based on what they watch and interact with. This means that once someone begins viewing content related to self-harm, eating disorders, suicide, anxiety, body image, or other distressing topics, they may be shown more of the same. This repeated exposure can create an echo chamber that may be difficult to break away from, particularly for young people or those already experiencing mental health difficulties.

Research has linked excessive social media use with poorer mental health outcomes in some people, including increased anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, body image concerns, disrupted sleep, and social comparison. Children and teenagers are especially vulnerable, spending hours each day consuming short-form content that can influence how they think, feel, and see themselves.

There are also ongoing concerns about harmful viral trends, cyberbullying, unrealistic beauty standards, misinformation, and content that can encourage risky or unhealthy behaviours. Although TikTok has introduced safety features and content moderation, many people believe these measures do not go far enough to prevent harmful material from reaching vulnerable users.

Mental health should never come second to engagement, advertising revenue, or profits. Social media companies have a responsibility to create platforms that genuinely protect their users, especially children and young people.

This petition calls on decision-makers to put public health first by taking stronger action to address the risks associated with TikTok. If the platform cannot effectively protect its users from harmful content and reduce the negative impact its algorithm may have on mental wellbeing, then a ban should be seriously considered.

We owe it to current and future generations to create a safer online environment where wellbeing is prioritised over endless scrolling and algorithm-driven engagement.

If you believe more should be done to protect mental health online, please sign and share this petition. Every signature helps raise awareness, encourages meaningful action, and sends a clear message that the wellbeing of children, young people, and adults must come before the interests of any social media platform.
