Ban Thin Blue Line Insignia in Beaconsfield

The Issue

Feeling unsafe in your own community is a heavy burden to carry. As someone who is autistic, the presence of white supremacy symbols like the Thin Blue Line inscribed on the uniforms of officers in Beaconsfield is profoundly concerning to me and others like me. One officer was seen wearing this insignia just one kilometre from a synagogue, and another was spotted at a concert celebrating Mizrahi Jewish music. These events should foster community connection, not division.

The Thin Blue Line insignia, which features a black Canadian flag with a horizontal blue line, represents a significant divide between police officers and the community, particularly impacting the Black community. It's important to recognize the damage it does by symbolizing a wedge, rather than unity. In Montreal, the Society of Police for the Village of Montreal (SPVM) has already moved to ban this insignia due to its associations with white supremacy, sending a strong message of inclusion and understanding.

It's essential that Beaconsfield follows Montreal's example. Multiple media sources and studies document the association of the Thin Blue Line with white supremacy, which threatens the trust and safety within our communities. Autistic individuals, alongside other marginalized groups, are at a higher risk of being harmed by law enforcement, exacerbating the fear and exclusion felt when confronted by these divisive symbols.  https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/montreal-police-patch-replace-thin-blue-line-1.7218190

While some officers argue this symbol is meant to honor fallen comrades, there exists an alternative symbol that can pay respect without carrying such controversial and harmful connotations.  The alternative, created in partnership with the Black community, consists of two beavers holding a shield.  The new insignia suggests community and represents Canada.

Urge Beaconsfield to stand for unity and safety by banning the Thin Blue Line insignia from its Municipal Patrol officers. Let us choose community strengthening over division and build an environment where all citizens feel safe and included.

Please sign this petition to help remove this divisive symbol from our community and foster a more inclusive and peaceful Beaconsfield.
