The Issue

Using a gas chamber to euthanize an animal  is extremely unethical and inhumane. It is often claimed to be "primarily used for those deemed too aggressive or dangerous for injection euthanasia." There are many other logical and humane methods to approach "dangerous" animals when needing to be euthanized.

The gas chamber as a means to put animals down is both cruel and outdated, causing unnecessary fear and prolonged suffering in animals who deserve a peaceful and painless end of life. Consider the distress and terror these animals endure as they are confined in a chamber, often watching as others succumb before them—this is not the compassionate care they should receive.

Alternatives like euthanasia by lethal injection are more humane and should be uniformly adopted, as they allow for a more controlled, less stressful, and quicker end. States that have adopted the lethal injection method have shown it to be effective and considerate, ensuring that animals are treated with the dignity they deserve during euthanasia.

Numerous animal welfare organizations, veterinarians, and experts advocate for the elimination of the gas chamber. Several states in the U.S. have already banned its use, creating a ripple effect encouraging others to follow suit. The ongoing use of gas chambers tarnishes the commitment to ethical treatment of animals, portraying a lack of empathy from those who are meant to care for them.

I urge lawmakers, animal control agencies, and the general public to support the transition from gas chambers to more humane methods like lethal injection. Let us come together to implement policies that reflect our evolved understanding of animal welfare. Let's ensure every living being receives respect and care even at the end of its life.

Please join me in calling for the end of this cruel practice. Sign the petition to ban the use of gas chambers for euthanizing animals and advocate for the adoption of humane alternatives.

The Decision Makers

Thank you for sharing this petition and for raising awareness about the use of gas chambers for animal euthanasia. I want to acknowledge the concern and provide some clarity on how decisions like this are made in Wyoming. While I can certainly look at what our statutes say, this issue is ultimately a matter of local control. In Wyoming, it is up to each municipality — such as city or town councils — to decide whether or not to allow the use of gas chambers in their animal shelters. In the case of Green River, where I represent, this would be a decision for the city or town leadership. I also want to note that Rock Springs ceased this practice in 2020, which shows that change is possible. I will be doing outreach soon to their administrators to understand more and gather information on how that process occurred. That said, I am open to seeing how I might be able to help. I was under the impression that more counties and municipalities in Wyoming have been moving toward the no-kill model, and I’d like to explore what support or encouragement could be given at the state level to reinforce that shift. Please know that I value hearing from constituents on this issue, and I appreciate the passion you’ve shown through this petition. Respectfully, Rep.
