In Massachusetts, wildlife rehabilitators and wildlife clinics witness the devastating effects of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) on birds of prey and other predatory species. These toxic substances, used in rodent control, are causing secondary poisoning in our wildlife, undermining ecological balance and inadvertently worsening the very rodent problem they’re intended to solve.

Recent studies by Dr. Murray at Tufts Wildlife Clinic reveal shocking findings: 100% of tested birds showed SGAR exposure, with many carrying two to four types of these toxic compounds.

These poisons are killing our essential rodent predators, including eagles and owls. Each bird of prey, fox or coyote lost means thousands more rodents left unchecked. SGARs are creating an unnatural cycle. A predatory species are paying the ultimate price for keeping our rodents in check.

Why has Massachusetts not yet acted?

California has already banned SGARs, and Massachusetts should be next. We have undeniable evidence, including two bald eagles—protected under state law—who have died from SGAR exposure. Harvard Law School has even petitioned the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture to immediately suspend the registration of these poisons and sent along a plethora of proof - yet they are still in use, 6 months later.

Despite overwhelming proof and pleas from animal advocacy groups across the state, SGARs remain in use.

In 2023 alone, over 535,000 pounds of rat poison were used in Massachusetts, with more than 90% being SGARs.

The people of Massachusetts are calling for change. We urge you to join us in saying NO MORE to SGARs. Together, we can demand that Massachusetts protect its wildlife, restore ecological balance, and adopt safer, sustainable methods for rodent control.

It’s time for Massachusetts to lead the way. Say NO to SGARs.

The pest control subcommittee is responsible for reviewing, registering, and when necessary, restricting pesticides in the Commonwealth - this is the group we need to ask to stop the use of these products.
