Ban the Use of Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers in Residential Areas

The Issue

I am a resident of Baltimore, MD, living with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Every time a gas-powered leaf blower is used in my neighborhood, it triggers an overwhelming sensation akin to fireworks exploding in my head. This experience is not only distressing but also debilitating, especially when the noise continues for hours on end.

Gas-powered leaf blowers are not just a nuisance to those with sound sensitivities or conditions like mine; they also contribute significantly to air and noise pollution. According to the California Air Resources Board, running a commercial leaf blower for one hour emits pollution comparable to driving a 2017 Toyota Camry about 1100 miles - approximately the distance from Chicago to Houston.

Moreover, these devices operate at volumes far exceeding safe levels. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that prolonged exposure to noise above 75 decibels can cause hearing loss; gas-powered leaf blowers often exceed 100 decibels.

By banning the use of these machines on residential property in Baltimore, we can improve our quality of life and protect our environment. We urge local lawmakers and community leaders to enact regulations that prioritize health and tranquility over convenience.

Electric and battery powered options exist that work just as well, emit no pollution, are far quieter, are healthier for users and less expensive to operate.

Please sign this petition if you believe everyone deserves peace within their own homes and communities.
